Monaco changes[]

Hello all! I'm part of the Wikia Community Team and I'm starting to look after all of our technology wikis. I wanted to say hello and let you know that I'm here to answer any questions or solve any problems with the rollout of Wikia's New Style today. Please leave a message on my talk page if you need me! Thanks — Catherine (talk) 09:58, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Since there didn't seem to be objections to this, I've gone ahead and made the switch to the new skin. Hopefully you'll notice very little difference except that the sidebar has moved back to the left as it traditionally was in monobook and other very old skins. If you have any concerns about this, please let me know on my talk page. Angela (talk) 05:33, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Spotlights, main page adjustments[]

Hello, all! Thanks for the excellent work you've been doing here. I've got a couple of things to ask you about. First of all, I'd like to let you know about our "Wikia Spotlights", which can be displayed on our other tech wikis in order to bring more readers and editors here. If you are interested in getting Sawfish Wiki spotlighted, you will need to meet the criteria at Wikia:Wikia Spotlights. You've already got plenty of articles, but there are a few other best practices you can follow that could bring you a lot more traffic. The first easy thing you can do is to use the "move" tab to rename your main page from Main Page to Sawfish Wiki (even if the title is hidden): our stats show that including your wiki's topic in the title of your main page increases search engine rankings and visitor traffic significantly!

You might also want to discuss whether it's necessary to use DPL on your main page -- this can be detrimental to your site's performance. See Help:Using DynamicPageList Effectively for more information, and some lighter alternatives that might help you achieve the same effects.

Also, as we announced in our site-wide talk page notice recently, Wikia needs to change our layout and ad strategy for business reasons, to continue to be able to support our free hosting. I would like to help you make some changes to the layout of the main page, as described at Help:Main page column tags. You can feel free to work on possible page layouts on your own, or with your permission I can play with some possible layouts on a temp page, and you can tell me what sort of design you like best. If you're interested, we also have the ability to add some interactive content, like embedded video or embedded RSS news feeds, or a live excerpt of the lists on Special:Wantedpages or Special:Newpages.

Thank you very much for your patience and cooperation -- I know ads aren't a fun thing for anyone, but we need to adapt to the changing market in order to keep our servers up and running, so that the Sawfish Wiki can continue to thrive and grow with the new visitors we hope to bring in! I look forward to working with you -- please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any concerns or questions about the changes. — Catherine (talk) 00:52, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I have little time recently, because I'm preparing for two conferences - one this week, and another in two weeks. We like the main page as it is currently, including the top detractable menu. I understand that you need to add ads, so please do that in the least intrusive way possible. The best if you could do that without changing the layout? But you know better what is possible and what not. Interactive content would be too distracting for a visitor, The sawfish is not about bells and whistles - it's about being non-intrusive, silent and very functional to use. If you would prepare several various layouts perhaps we could choose one from them. Janek Kozicki 10:35, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
As suggested I've added the "allowcachedresults=true" to every DPL query of the main page. Aav 08:38, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
